Stephan Sturm, was Chairman of the Management Board of Fresenius (equivalent to President and CEO) from July 1, 2016 until September 30, 2022, after serving for 11 and a half years as the company’s Chief Financial Officer. Before joining Fresenius in 2005, he was a Managing Director of Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB), from 2000 as Head of Investment Banking for Germany and Austria, and also served on CSFB’s European Management Committee. During his more than 13 years in investment banking, Stephan Sturm held various executive positions with BHF-Bank, Union Bank of Switzerland and CSFB in Frankfurt and London. Prior to entering investment banking in 1991, he was a management consultant at McKinsey & Co in Duesseldorf and Frankfurt. Stephan Sturm holds a degree in Business from Mannheim University.
Rachel Empey was Chief Financial Officer of Fresenius from August 1, 2017 to August 31, 2022. Before joining Fresenius on August 1, 2017, she served as Chief Financial and Strategy Officer of Telefónica Deutschland Holding AG and member of the Telefónica Deutschland Management Board, starting in 2011. Previously, Rachel Empey held a number of key international finance and controlling positions in the Telefónica group. She started her career as an auditor at Ernst & Young and business analyst at Lucent Technologies. Rachel Empey, who is British and German, is a chartered accountant and holds an MA (Hons) in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Oxford.
Responsible for Human Resources (Labor Relations Director), Risk Management and Legal
Sebastian Biedenkopf, joined the Management Board in December 2020 with responsibility for Human Resources (Labor Relations Director), Risk Management and Legal. Previously, he headed the international legal department of the Bosch Group for seven years. From 2008 until 2012, he held various positions at Conergy AG in Hamburg, lastly as Chief Financial Officer and interim Chief Executive Officer. Before joining Conergy AG, Biedenkopf served as General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Maxingvest AG (formerly Tchibo Holding AG) in Hamburg, and in various positions at the Bertelsmann Group. He began his career as a lawyer in Düsseldorf and Washington, D.C., and holds a doctorate in law from Germany’s University of Freiburg.
Rice Powell, was CEO of Fresenius Medical Care from January 1, 2013 until September 30, 2022. He joined Fresenius Medical Care in 1997 and was appointed to the Company's Management Board and Co-CEO of Fresenius Medical Care North America in January 2004. In 2010, he was assumed the position of Vice Chairman of the Management Board and Member of the Management Board responsible for the region North America. He has over 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry. From 1978 to 1996 he held various positions, among others at Baxter International Inc. and Biogen Inc in the U.S.

Michael Sen, joined the Management Board of Fresenius in April 2021 with responsibility for Fresenius Kabi. Before joining Fresenius Kabi, he was a member of the Management Board of Siemens AG, where he was responsible for the healthcare business Siemens Healthineers and for Siemens’ energy business. Prior to that, he was Chief Financial Officer of E.ON SE. At the start of his professional career, Michael Sen completed an apprenticeship at Siemens in Berlin and then studied business administration at the Technical University of Berlin.
Francesco De Meo, joined the Management Board of Fresenius in January 2008 with responsibility for Fresenius Helios. In 2000, Francesco De Meo became head of the legal and human resources departments of Helios. On January 1, 2001, he was appointed to the Helios Management Board with responsibilities for human resources, legal affairs, research and science. At the same time, he was also appointed Labor Relations Director. Before joining Helios, Francesco De Meo was director of Rauser AG, a management consultancy in Reutlingen, as well as a practicing attorney. He studied law and earned a doctorate at Tübingen University.
Ernst Wastler, has served as CEO of VAMED AG since July 1, 2001, and joined the Fresenius Management Board on January 1, 2008. Ernst Wastler became a member of the VAMED AG Management Board in 1998 and was responsible for projects and services central Europe. Prior to that, he held several management positions at international business segments of the VAMED Group. His career began in 1981 in international consulting, engineering and project management at Austroplan GmbH in Vienna. Ernst Wastler studied international business at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration and earned a doctorate there in 1983.
