In 1912, Dr. Eduard Fresenius started his business with a clear vision: to maintain and improve people’s health.
Improving the quality of life of ill people and promoting health has been our driving force for more than 100 years. As a healthcare group with more than 300,000 employees, Fresenius plays an important role in today’s society. With innovative solutions and forward-looking action, we provide access to high-quality and affordable medicine to a growing number of people. Responsible and sustainable corporate governance is part of our corporate culture and our day-to-day business.

Where are we today?
We are on the way
We have a clear picture of where we stand in terms of sustainability and where we want our journey to take us. Orienting ourselves to our values, which have made us successful so far, will continue to be a key factor for the long-term development of our Group.
The route of travel
In recent years, we started with an assessment of existing sustainability approaches at the Group level. Building on this, we have created governance structures and resources to strengthen the integration of sustainability in the Group and to develop Group-wide targets. This sets the route for the near future.
- Since 2016, the wide range of activities and their operational implementation across the Group have been assisted centrally .
- The Group's annual sustainability reporting has been carried out in a separate report since 2017 and is supplemented by online content.
- The Group Sustainability Board was established in 2020. It pursues the overarching goal of strengthening the key sustainability topics for the Group and expanding cross-Group collaboration.
- Since 2021, the key sustainability topics have been included in the compensation of the Board of Management.
Making achievements visible and measurable
Moving toward the goal
It is our ambition to make sustainability visible as well to the outside. Our journey should be transparent and comprehensible.
We want to make our approaches more measurable, in all the topics that are important to us. Success in the evaluation of our company is not enough for us. However, they are proof that the path we have taken is the right one. We have improved our ESG Ratings. This reinforces our conviction that the approaches we are taking are on target.
We continue to go further
We have begun our journey on the path of sustainability. We are guided on this path by what has made us successful: Our aspiration to provide access to affordable healthcare for as many people as possible worldwide.
